Who used that RI?

So, you bought a bunch of RI’s, probably before Savings Plans came out, and you need to see which AWS accounts used which ones and how much of them? Now this may seem like a difficult, time consuming horrible task. But don’t worry friends, I can solve all your problems… well help this one, with one simple Athena query!

Now to be fair I am assuming you have done the sensible thing and setup a Cost and Usage Report (CUR) into the correct format for Athena to read from and you to be able to utilise. If this is however not the case then please see here how you get this setup :)

Anyway, back to RIs.

Now I think it is important for me to clarify why I had to do this piece of work. At the company I work for we have been purchasing RIs for a number of years, but you could imagine my horror when I found out we weren’t charging our account owners based on their consumption of the RI but more on the proportion of the bill they consumed. You can instantly see the plot hole when a large account that spends a lot in AWS doesn’t use any RI's but still has to foot the bill.

I said ‘No more!’ to this and sought out a way of finding how we can assign these costs to their rightful owners. Luckily for me I had attended a Cost Optimisation Workshop at the 2018 Re-invent and had met Nathen Besh who I was able to ask for assistance with this. You can find more information on the WA Labs here.

Therefore, I now have a nice and simple SQL query for Athena which I can use to recharge out the correct consumption of RI’s. See here to get your hands on it!! And of course we can't just run an athena query each month manually to get this data (remember readers I am lazy). So I recommend passing this in as a lambda function, see some documentation here.

Hopefully this will help you get a better insight into your RI consumption in an automated way.

But if you have already gone through the looking glass and have purchased SPs, here is a bit more info on how you can do the same allocation of cost.

Hopefully this has helped you to get this data simply and quickly if you were having difficulty before.
